What to expect from arrival to fellowship
Sunday at Medhane Alem is the heart of our week. The Divine Liturgy is an ancient service of prayer, Scripture, and Holy Communion that has been celebrated for centuries. Whether this is your first time or your hundredth, here is what your Sunday morning will look like.
The Sunday Service
Mahlet (Hymns)
The service opens with Mahlet — early morning hymns, psalms, and prayers that prepare the faithful for the Liturgy.
Qidase (Liturgy)
The Qidase begins with prayers and hymns led by the clergy and deacons. You're welcome to arrive at any point during the service.
Holy Communion

Fellowship & Coffee
After the service, everyone gathers in the hall for coffee, food, and conversation. This is the best time to meet people and get involved within our community.
What to Know
Parking
Free parking is available in the church lot. Accessible parking spaces are located near the main entrance. Street parking is also available on surrounding roads.
Dress Code
Modest dress is appreciated. Women traditionally wear a head covering (netela) during the service.
Children
Children are welcome in the service at all times. Sunday School classes are available for children during part of the Liturgy. A quiet area is available for parents with young children.
Language
The Liturgy is primarily celebrated in Ge'ez and Tigrinya. Every other Sunday, an English Liturgy is offered. Don't worry if you can't follow everything, the experience is meaningful regardless.
First-Time Visitors
If it's your first time, just come as you are. Feel free to sit, stand, and observe. No one expects you to know the order of service. Someone nearby will be happy to help. See our new members guide for next steps.
